Upcoming MDS Data Validation Process for Skilled Nursing Facilities – Fall 2025
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will soon begin a data validation process to ensure the accuracy of information reported through the Minimum Data Set (MDS). This validation supports both the Skilled Nursing Facility Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) and Quality Reporting Programs (QRP).
What is the MDS Data Validation?
This process checks the reliability of MDS-based quality measures used in federal performance programs. The goal is to confirm that the data submitted by facilities accurately reflect patient care.
Who May Be Selected?
Facilities that meet both of the following criteria will be considered for validation:
- Submitted at least one MDS assessment during the previous calendar year
- Submitted at least one MDS assessment during the current fiscal year
Facilities are randomly selected from among all that meet eligibility requirements.
How Will You Be Notified?
If your facility is selected, you’ll receive a notification in your iQIES (Internet Quality Improvement and Evaluation System) under the MDS 3.0 Provider Preview Reports folder.
What Is Required?
Selected SNFs will be asked to submit supporting medical record documentation for up to 10 MDS assessments.
⏳ You will have 45 calendar days from the date the selection notice is posted in iQIES to provide the required documentation.
Goal: To Stay Compliant
Timely submission of accurate records is essential to remain in compliance with federal program requirements.
If you have questions or need assistance, CMS has additional resources available on the website.
