Upon arrival, Larry experienced difficulty swallowing and communicating clearly. He was fully aware of these challenges, which led him to choose to isolate in his room due to rising anxiety, even though Larry loves to sit with other residents in the dining room.
With support from his SLP, Kaylee, Larry, and his wife, collaborated to identify voice as the top concern. After exploring the SPEAKOUT! Parkinson's Voice Project with limited success, his SLP introduced the EMST 150 (Expiratory Muscle Strength Trainer). With education, both Larry and his wife committed to a trial.
After Speech Therapy and one week into his EMST trial program, Larry, his wife, and his SLP heard a clear voice during short conversations- the first time in months, per Larry's wife. At the start of Larry's five week trial, his personal goal was to be able to sing "Happy Birthday" to his speech therapist. By his last week of training, Larry was able to proudly sing Happy Birthday to his SLP! Larry achieved all goals during his skilled intervention period, and, his difficulties with swallowing also improved due to targeted therapy. With his newfound success, Larry truly found his voice, confidence, and connection again.
