Mr. Meyette arrived at Hillcrest Commons on 1/9/2026 after being hospitalized for 1 month with a diagnosis of acute hypoxic hypercapnic respiratory failure complicated by septic shock. Mr. Meyette was on a ventilator as he could not breathe on his own. Several attempts to remove the vent were not successful in the hospital. He had a peg tube placed for nutrition and suffered multiple pleural effusions. Mr. Meyette was total assist with a mechanical lift for out of bed to a recliner chair. He could only tolerate a short time out of bed.
Mr. Meyette was unfortunately transferred back to the hospital on 1/14 again for multiple pleural effusions. He returned back to Hillcrest on 1/27 and his rehab was underway. PT, OT, and SLP collaborated with nursing and the respiratory team for an optimal program for Mr. Meyette. This was indeed a team effort. Daily small gains were obtained and Mr. Meyette's strong will to survive was apparent indeed. Our PTA Michael English, worked daily with Mr. Meyette, and was also extremely driven to return him to his previous function which was living alone in his apartment with services in place. From sitting on the side of the bed, to standing, to taking those small first steps, every day was an adventure and achievement to say the least.
These milestones were significant because they showed his strength, endurance, and confidence returning after a very serious illness. Everything had meaning from being able to walk again to being able to eat again. Every small step was positive for an amazing outcome. Mr. Meyette was discharged back to his home on 4/1/2026, independent, with services in place for supporting his next level of care. Upon discharge from Hillcrest Commons, Mr. Meyette was independent with ambulation and ADL's. He was thrilled to return back to home.
