Leon's recovery journey started out with a single goal: to return home after his amputation. Prior to therapy, Leon was able to propel with his wheelchair, but due to the steps in his home, and COPD, it quickly became apparent that his recovery goals needed to focus on getting to a place where he could safely mobilize while standing. Starting out, Leon could not stand for more than 30 seconds at a time without experiencing discomfort, and he required caregiver assistance for transfers.
As he was reaching his goals and nearing graduation from therapy services, Leon took the time to talk to a new patient who had just had a similar amputation surgery, and was feeling discouraged. Leon met with her several times, after which this individual was seen engaging more within the community and participating in activities! Leon's compassionate heart touched his therapy team, as it was inspiring to see his positivity to help another patient along with her journey just as he was completing his.
With determination and the support of his close friend, who added home modifications to Leon's home, Leon graduated from therapy and returned home. He now safely stands and walks up stairs once again. Way to go, Leon!
