Kenneth– From NPO to Pizza with Powerback

During a hospitalization for a malfunctioning PEG tube and excessive vomiting, Kenneth developed a respiratory illness.

Upon arrival, Kenneth's diet was NPO (nothing by mouth) except for ice chips. Additionally, Kenneth required maximum assistance to transfer from sitting to standing and ADLs, with moderate assistance required for bed mobility.

After Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy with Powerback, Kenneth can now:

• Independently walk 250+ feet with a mobility aid and complete bed mobility tasks and sit/stand transfers
• Independently complete ADLs (dressing, bathing, etc.)
• Eat PO (by mouth) with a level of supervision; notably, Kenneth was able to enjoy pizza with his rehab team the day before his discharge home

Kenneth’s family had hoped that with treatment, he would be able to eat again and return home. This noteworthy outcome, where Kenneth was discharged home, and can now eat PO, is not only incredibly inspirational for Kenneth and his family– it also reaffirmed the necessity of the services our rehab team provides. Kenneth's rehabilitation team was soinspired by his recovery that it helped them to remember how their work truly has an incredible impact, with the ability to change lives. ‍
